Conceived and still based in Geneva, Caran d’Ache was named after a French cartoonist and comes from ‘karandash’, Russian for pencil. In 1915, Arnold Schweitzer bought the Ecridor Pencil Factory and started manufacturing high quality pencils from the local graphite mined from the Swiss mountains. From the start, exquisite craftsmanship was high on the agenda, with each pen or pencil undergoing a series of rigorous checks before it was deemed fit to bear the Caran d’Ache name. The company prides itself on its strict standards, meaning when you buy a Caran d’Ache writing instrument, you know its quality is guaranteed.
Today, Caran d’Ache match their traditional artisan skills – Chinese lacquer done by hand, the use of noble materials such as platinum, gold, silver, rhodium or wood – with the performance and precision of technology and new materials such as carbon fibre.
